2009 SEIU Scholarship Opportunities
Unions like SEIU help working families fulfill their dreams in many different ways. This includes yearly scholarship opportunities. SEIU awards 52 scholarships annually that enable our members and children to pursue their educational goals at accredited colleges, universities, and technical schools. Scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $5,000.
SEIU awarded one scholarship to an SEIU Healthcare 1199NW applicant in 2008: Jesse Brim (son of Kay Hodges, RN, Swedish Medical Center).
SEIU awarded three scholarships to SEIU Healthcare 1199NW applicants in 2007: Megan Jonas (daughter of Mary Jonas, RN, Swedish Medical Center), Daniel Vishoot (son of James Vishoot, RN, Swedish Medical Center) and William Kim (son of Inja Kim, LPN, Group Health Cooperative).
Eligibility and scholarship information can be found online at www.seiu1199nw.org, or by calling the SEIU Healthcare 1199NW office at 1-800-422-8934. Applications can be accessed and filed at www.applyists.net (you will need an application key – please call our office).
Applications must be postmarked or filed online by midnight March 2, 2009. Winners will be notified in late spring. Only SEIU members of three or more years and their children are eligible to apply. Applications should be mailed to SEIU Scholarship Program, c/o ISTS, PO Box 23737, Nashville, TN 37202-3737.
Description of scholarships:
SEIU Lottery Scholarship
A total of 48 lottery scholarships are awarded annually. Fiften $1,000 scholarships renewable for up to four years as well as 33 $1,500 scholarships for one year of study.
SEIU Moe Foner Scholarship
One $5,000 nonrenewable scholarship is available to students who are pursuing a degree or training in the visual or performing arts, and who believe that the arts are a vehicle to advance social change.
SEIU Jesse Jackson Scholarship
One $5,000 scholarship renewable for up to four years is given to a student whose work and aspirations for economic and social justice reflect the values and accomplishments of the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
SEIU John Geagan Scholarship
One $5,000 scholarship to be expended over a 24-month period ($2,500 per year). The annual scholarship is for SEIU members, their children, and local staff who want to pursue a college degree in labor studies. The John Geagan Scholarship was created primarily to serve those applicants who are not served by traditional education institutions - typically adults who have been in the workforce and have decided to go, or return, to college.
